Grow Lyric Blog

Some songs take months to write, some take an afternoon, some involve having to listen to Mickey sort out drum parts in a dark garage – these particulars leave your veins feeling clogged by an invisible amalgam of boredom and stupor.

Happy days.

Grow started out as a procrastination song – Mickey had a couple of weeks off recently when he became a Dad again – so I was trying to finish lyrics. I have this dangerous habit of when something gets hard just sacking it off. Like golf – I love walking off half way through a round, mainly because I’m shit (but also because I tell myself that it is an elitist and sexist sport played solely by Ukippers) – and like the topic of this blog seemingly…

Anyway, I couldn’t finish a song so i started writing another song (this is how half of Life is Elsewhere happened). And in an afternoon Grow was born – Mickey kept popping his head in, and it was increasingly finished.

Although just based around a couple of simple progressions it has a nice groove (like a Prince song written by a 12 year old), but isn’t too musically taxing… the lyrics are an attempt to talk about the idea of standing up to prying bigoted eyes. There are many dangerous people about it our politics at the minute – from those who oppose gay marriage, to those who are pretty ignorant about immigration – and they all seem to be myopically obsessed with denigrating others.

If WE are ELECTING these people then I think we’ve still got a pretty long way to go.
So to all these people, amongst others – HANG YA HEADS.

Stilted by the way
That your zealous eyes
Live me on like a knife
Guilt in all the things
That you do without
But make no sacrifice

Grow

And we maybe be all so different
And we maybe all so wise
It’s the damaged little smile
As you eat yourself
That makes me realise

Say listen
It’s the same country
We glisten
It’ll never be your way
I hope
The shame lessens
As you plead your knees
Say listen
It’ll never be your way
I hope
