So, we’re not a contrived band – we tried it for a bit and everything sounded really bad (I mean maybe it stills sounds really bad but we just don’t notice…). This means that we don’t really have agendas when we write a song, they just tend to happen and then afterwards I try to explain them in a lyric blog haha..

Kenny has been knocking around for a while… I don’t know why Kenny, other than it is a cool name and I do an injoke around Kenny Loggins logging out, which probably made it stick in my head. Plus it was about time we did a song with a boy’s name, right?

The story itself is pretty obvious, just being up and down and feeling weird and excited about falling in love with someone – all the little descriptions in the song are designed to be gibberish/cliches/hopefully different ways to describe this bananas feeling… plus everyone loves a last minute winner.

However, it’s obviously a relationship between two men, of which I have no experience.. this leads to the dilemma when trying to publicise or talk about a song like Kenny..

The last thing I ever want to in a song is to ‘splain – I’m a white, middle aged, straight man there’s no getting away from that, but sometimes I escape in song to inhabit the mind of a character.. I don’t know why I do this, but I guess when I write I try to be away with the fairies.. and yes things can be based in some sort of experiential framework, but I am ABSOLUTELY aware that when I’m writing a song like Violence or Kenny, that I am dealing with a subject that I have no grasp of – I have never experienced sexual violence, I am not a woman, I am not a member of the LGBTQ+ community – so in that sense it’s with trepidation that we release Kenny.

I would hate to ever use the incorrect language to deal with a topic or seem insensitive or glib in having answers for a societal issue (in this case homophobia) of which I have not experienced. So, do we still release the music or the song, or talk about the issues within – it’s a really hard line to walk BUT please, let us know – listening is always the best way right so please interact with us to tell us your thoughts!! Maybe you think Kenny does a shit job – tell me please so I can learn..

Plus, like some other bands do, we don’t want to profit from an issue or use the sense of being an “ally” to sell tickets or merch or albums.

So yeah, hopefully Kenny just says what we hope would be obvious – two people always deserve to be happy. End of.
